View ResourceBuilding Codes & Regulations
International Building Code (IBC) — Flashing Requirements
The IBC is the model building code adopted by most US jurisdictions for commercial construction. Chapter 14 covers exterior wall flashing requirements; roofing flashing is covered in Chapter 15. IBC flashing requirements specify minimum lap dimensions, materials, and through-wall flashing at all wall penetrations and openings.
View ResourceInternational Residential Code (IRC) — Flashing Requirements
The IRC governs one- and two-family dwellings. Section R903 covers roof flashing requirements; R703 covers wall flashing at windows, doors, and wall penetrations. Both sections mandate flashing at all roof-wall intersections, valleys, roof edges, and penetrations. Widely adopted by Texas jurisdictions.
View ResourceASCE 7 — Minimum Design Loads for Buildings
The structural engineering standard that establishes wind load requirements used to design coping caps, gravel stops, and other roof edge metals for wind uplift resistance. Wind speed maps in ASCE 7 form the basis for SPRI ES-1 wind zone selection.
View ResourceTexas Department of Insurance — Windstorm Requirements
TDI windstorm inspection and compliance requirements for the Texas Gulf Coast and designated catastrophe areas. Sheet metal flashing on TDI-regulated construction must comply with windstorm standards. Critical reference for coastal Texas projects.
View ResourceRoofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) — Licensing
Texas does NOT require a state roofing license through TDLR — roofing is unregulated at the state level. RCAT (Roofing Contractors Association of Texas) administers the voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program. Architects specifying work in Texas should request RCAT credentials from roofing contractors.
