Edge metal, coping and flashing for Austin's commercial jobs
ES-1 edge, coping, through-wall flashing and scuppers, built to your spec section and shop drawings in our Burnet shop. Delivered to Austin jobsites, shipped nationwide.
Takeoffs, submittals, fabrication and delivery by the same people, so what the architect approved is what lands on the roof.
Tested edge metal
ES-1 tested edge systems
Drexel Metals fascia, gravel stop and coping, fabricated under Drexel's ES-1 program and tested to ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435 ES-1. Test documentation goes in your submittal.
Profiles bent to your exact dimensions in the metal, gauge and finish you specify: coping, edge metal, through-wall flashing, scuppers and collector heads, counterflashing and trim.
The edge doesn't match the drawings? Photograph it.
For PMs and supers on commercial re-roofs, renovations and finish-outs: the existing coping or gravel stop is rarely what the as-builts show, if there are as-builts. Photograph the piece with one tape measurement from the roof. We draw it in FlashDraft and confirm every dimension with you before it's bent.

Three things drive the sheet metal on Austin commercial work. Here's what each means for the flashing, and the fastest way to get it made.

Low-slope edges must meet ES-1
ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435 ES-1 is the wind design standard for edge systems on low-slope roofs, and it's written into the International Building Code. On a low-slope roof, the edge and coping have to answer to it.

Multifamily, new and historic
The two largest projects on the pipeline board are housing: St. John North, three buildings ($36.1M), and Pathways at Santa Rita Courts East, a four-story building plus 11 historic buildings renovated ($30M).
Warehouse, flex-shell and big-box jobs like the ones on the pipeline board usually carry large low-slope roofs, so drainage gets worked out early. Screen the design flow with the Roof Drainage calculator. Once the plumbing designer sizes the outlets and overflow, send them to us and we fabricate the scuppers, collector heads and downspouts.

1Roof areaEnter the horizontal projected roof area, plus any wall area that drains onto the roof.
2Design rainfallEnter the rate your governing code requires for the site. The calculator links to NOAA’s precipitation data to look it up.
3Outlets and codeEnter the number of outlets, their rated capacity from the manufacturer if you have it, and the code edition you are working to.
4Design flowGet the design flow in gpm, the flow per outlet and the contributing area. Add it to a submittal, download a spreadsheet or print it.
The calculator is a preliminary screen. Outlet, leader and overflow sizing, ponding and secondary drainage stay with the plumbing designer.

ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435 ES-1 is the wind design standard for edge systems used with low-slope roofs. It covers how the edge is designed and tested to stay on the building in high wind, and it is referenced by the International Building Code. AFS fabricates Drexel Metals ES-1 edge systems.
ES-1 includes a pull-off test for coping, alongside two tests for fascia edges. A coping is only as strong as the assembly that was tested: the gauge, the cleat and the fastener spacing. We build Drexel ES-1 coping to its tested details and put the test documentation in your submittal.
On a parapet they are the same thing: the metal cover over the top of the wall, with legs down both faces and a drip or hem at each edge. "Cap" is often used for simpler one-piece covers; "coping" is the term you will see in specs and on drawings.
It depends on the wall width (which sets the stretch-out), the gauge, the metal and finish, the linear footage, and how many corners, end caps and splices the run needs. Upload the roof plan and parapet detail through Scan to Quote and we will price your exact run.
Water gets into masonry and veneer walls. Through-wall flashing catches it inside the wall, at the base, over window heads, at sills and at shelf angles, and turns it back out through weeps before it reaches the structure or the interior.
End dams are the turned-up ends of through-wall and head flashing. They stop water from running off the end of the flashing and back into the wall. We form them as part of the piece, so the field crew is not folding them on the scaffold.
A scupper is the opening through the parapet or roof edge that lets water off the roof. A leader head, also called a collector or conductor head, is the box on the outside of the wall that catches the scupper's water and feeds the downspout.
Where parapets or other construction would trap water if the primary drains clog, the plumbing and building codes require secondary (overflow) drainage. Overflow scuppers through the parapet are one common way to provide it. Your plumbing designer sizes it; our Roof Drainage calculator gives a preliminary design flow to start from, and we fabricate the scupper to the size they set.
Follow the Submittals article in Part 1 of the spec section. For sheet metal flashing that usually means shop drawings for each profile, product data for the metal and finish, finish samples, and any test documentation the spec calls for, such as ES-1 for edge systems. The Spec-to-submittal desk on this page lays out the package for your job.
Kynar 500 is a PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resin, and Kynar 500 finishes are PVDF coatings applied to the coil before it is formed. Architects specify them for long-term color and gloss retention on exposed metal.
