Formulas
- Strips: pieces pooled per material, thickness and blank width, packed into 10 ft strips by first-fit decreasing; n pieces in a strip take n - 1 cut allowances (the sheet end is the last piece end)
- Pieces over 10 ft (to the 10 ft 6 in AFS maximum) are cut from coil and counted in the weights; longer pieces are refused
- Sheets: strip widths packed across 48 in by first-fit decreasing
- Utilization = piece area / sheet area; order weight = sheet weight x (1 + extra waste %)
Conventions
- Strips run along the 10 ft sheet length; a strip is as wide as the profile blank.
Limits - what it will not do
- First-fit decreasing is a heuristic: the sheet count is an upper estimate (FFD <= 11/9 OPT + 6/9).
- Prices come only from AFS on review.
Who must review it
- AFS estimator: confirm stock sizes, trim allowance and coil practice
Worked example
Inputs 10 pieces x 60 in of a 5 in blank, 24 ga galvanized, no allowance
Expected 5 strips, 1 sheet, utilization 52.08%, net 24.08 lb
Checked by an automated test on every change.

A 10 ft x 4 ft sheet; strips are cut along the 10 ft length, so strips per sheet = floor(48 / blank width).

Shop limits confirmed by AFS: max piece 10 ft 6 in, max girth 48 in, end flange 1/2 in, leg between bends 3/4 in, hem 3/8 in; material and gauge bend rules.
