Snap Coping-Max-C installation sequence
ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 edge system: 16 Ga Galv. Segmented Cleat w/Spring Clip, Snap-On Cover. 12" Face Max; 32" Wall Max; 6" Back Max.
This sequence follows Drexel Metals' published installation guide for the system. The project's specifications, the approved shop drawings and the roofing membrane manufacturer's requirements govern; where they differ, follow them and ask AFS. Source: Drexel Metals, “Installation Guide for Snap Coping-Max/Max-C”. Drexel publishes one guide for Snap Coping-Max-C and Snap Coping-Max.
Step 1 of 4
Installing Segmented Galvanized Cleat
- Before installing the cleat, make sure every metal component is isolated from ACQ-treated lumber with an appropriate membrane.
- Miter-cut the cleats together as needed at corners.
- Install the first cleat working away from the corner cleat, so half of the first cleat will be under the miter.
- Install additional cleats no more than 40" on center.
- Attach each cleat with a screw into every pre-punched hole.
As printed in the Drexel guide
“Additional Cleats to be installed no greater than 40" on center.”
“Attach the Cleat using #10-13x1-1/2" S.S. Panhead Woodscrews provided into each pre-punched hole.”
Common mistakes this step guards against
- Do not space cleats more than 40" on center.
- Do not set metal on ACQ-treated lumber without an isolating membrane.

Common mistakes
Each line is the reverse of an instruction the Drexel guide states.
- Do not space cleats more than 40" on center. (step 1)
- Do not set metal on ACQ-treated lumber without an isolating membrane. (step 1)
- Do not cut lengths that leave short sections next to each other. (step 3)
- Do not leave end caps or end terms unrestrained - fasten through the roof-side leg. (step 4)
Notes printed on the guide
- Isolate all metal parts from ACQ-treated wood, or any other galvanically incompatible material, with an appropriate membrane.
- Appliance attachments - lightning rods, signs, antennae - that penetrate the water seal, set up a galvanic reaction or otherwise compromise the roof edge system are to be eliminated or isolated, per section 8.0 of ANSI/SPRI ES-1. Isolate appliances from the edge system or do not attach them to it; the lightning protection manufacturer gives the attachment instructions.
Printed on the section detail
- 32" max. tested wall width
- Coping to be fabricated 1/2" larger than wall size to allow for any wall width variance and easier installation.
- #10-13x1-1/2" S.S. Panhead Woodscrew through pre-punched hole
