Gravel stops, fascia and edge metal: materials, standards and design constraints

Which document governs the edge, the strip-in and the project; the face and gap values Drexel prints for each system; why gaps and free-sliding covers exist; dissimilar metals and treated wood; and receiving, storing and cutting prefinished metal.

You will be able to: Identify who governs each part of an edge installation, read the face, gap and material limits Drexel prints, explain thermal movement, and handle and cut prefinished edge metal without damaging it.

Who governs what

AFS's guide pages state that the project specifications, the approved shop drawings and the roofing membrane maker's requirements govern; where they differ from the Drexel guide, follow them and ask AFS.

Drexel's Gravel Stop and Drip Edge guides put the cover strip on per the roofing membrane or roofing manufacturer's details.

Glossary

Cover strip
A strip supplied by the installer and applied per the roofing membrane maker's details: on the Drexel Gravel Stop to the cleat cant and face before the cover, on the Drip Edge over the roof flange as the last step.
Swarf
The fine metal particles that fall from a cut; MBCI warns they can permanently stain a metal panel and, where they pile up, rust through it.
ACQ-treated wood
Wood treated with ACQ preservative. Drexel names it alongside other galvanically incompatible materials and has every metal part isolated from it with an appropriate membrane.
Strippable vinyl film
A protective film on prefinished sheet; PAC-CLAD says it must be removed prior to or immediately after installation.
