Gravel stops, fascia and edge metal: defects, verification and case study

An inspection checklist built from the printed guides, the common edge-metal defects with the rule each one breaks and the fix, finish repairs, and a fictional case study of a fascia cover that lifts off by hand.

You will be able to: Diagnose a roof-edge installation defect against the printed guide, explain the corrective action the guide supports, and record the evidence for review.

Inspect against the printed guide

Inspect against the printed guide for the system on the roof, not against memory or the last job.

UFGS asks for exposed surfaces free from visible wave, warp, buckle and tool marks, and gives no numeric tolerance for it.

So record what you see, with a photo and a location, rather than a number nobody published.

Groups: Substrate (treated wood isolated); Cleat (on its seat and square, every pre-punched hole, continuous at corners); Cover (fully engaged, free to slide, no face nails); Joints (printed gap, splice plate at every joint, sealant where printed); Strip-in (in the order the system prints); Finish (film off, swarf cleaned, no visible waves or buckles); Records (photo and location for each finding).Check against the printed guideSubstrateCleatCoverJointsStrip-inFinishRecordstreated wood isolatedon its seat, squareevery pre-punched holecontinuous at cornersfully engagedfree to slide, no face nailsprinted gapsplice plate, every jointsealant where printedorder the system printsfilm offswarf and debris cleanedno visible waves, bucklesphoto and locationNo numeric straightness tolerance ispublished in the sources used here.

A checklist card with seven groups: substrate, cleat, cover, joints, strip-in, finish and records, each with the checks that trace to a printed rule.

Check against the printed guide for the system on the roof. No numeric straightness tolerance is published in the sources used here; record visible waves or buckles with a photo and a location.

Glossary

Engagement
How fully the hem or drip of an edge cover hooks onto its cleat; RICOWI positions cleats so it fully engages, while the cover stays free to slide.
Face nailing
Nailing through the exposed face of a flashing or edge cover; UFGS 07 60 00 states that it is not permitted.
Continuous cleat line
An unbroken run of cleat along the edge and around corners; the Drexel guides miter-cut or fit the cleat into each corner to keep it.
