Field inspection and leak remediation: principles and terminology
The difference between a planned inspection and a leak investigation, why flashings come first, why a stain is not the entry point, and the safety rules to settle before access.
You will be able to: Define the key terms of flashing inspection and leak investigation, name who does what, and state the safety boundaries before anyone goes on a roof.

Field inspection and leak remediation: materials, standards and design constraints
What each leak-test and survey standard says it covers, why a flood-test guide for decks does not fit a roof, how warranties set inspection, notice and repair rules, and why intervals differ.
You will be able to: Identify which standards and which warranty terms govern a field inspection or leak investigation, and what each one is and is not written for.

Field inspection and leak remediation: methods and worked application
The step-by-step path from leak call to closed-out repair, with worked examples for locating the roof point, budgeting a spray test and counting a warranty notice day.
You will be able to: Apply a documented method to a realistic inspection and leak task: follow the sequence, locate the roof point, budget a diagnostic spray test, and record assumptions, units and inspection points.

Field inspection and leak remediation: defects, verification and case study
Common flashing defects and what treats the cause, when repeated repairs should end in replacement, and a worked scenario that ties the method together.
You will be able to: Diagnose a plausible flashing defect from its symptom, choose a corrective option that treats the cause, and document the evidence for review.

Practical task
Produce a field inspection and leak job packet for a parapet coping that has an interior stain: use the example measurements from the worked lesson or your own, locate the roof point, complete the eight-point checklist, plan a diagnostic spray test and record a defect analysis.
Hand in
- A one-page decision rationale: what was reported, whether a warranty applies, who must be contacted first, and who is allowed to repair.
- A marked-up sketch or plan that shows the reference point, the measured distances, the roof point and the neighbouring elements to be inspected.
- The completed eight-point checklist with a note and a photograph reference for every finding.
- A spray test plan: the number of sections, the time per section, the order, the observer and the safety plan, with a statement of who set the numbers.
- A defect analysis that names the likely cause, the corrective option that treats it, and how the repair will be verified and recorded.
Rubric
| Criterion | Meets the standard when |
|---|---|
| Warranty first | The packet states whether a warranty applies and who is contacted before any repair, and does not assume a notice period. |
| Locating the roof point | Distances are measured from a stated reference point, the arithmetic is shown with units, and neighbouring elements are listed for inspection. |
| Checklist and records | All eight checks are completed or marked not applicable, each with a written note and a photograph reference. |
| Test planning | The spray plan counts sections by rounding up, totals the time, sets the order, names the observer, and says the consultant or specification sets the criteria. |
| Cause and verification | The defect analysis treats the cause rather than the symptom, never relies on sealant alone, and repeats the original check to verify. |
| Safety | The packet names the fall protection plan and the two-person rule before access, and does not treat inspection as an exemption. |
