Eaves, rakes and drip edge · Lesson 3 of 4

Eaves, rakes and drip edge: methods and worked application

The installation sequence on a shingle roof, the three published eave methods with an ice barrier, rake laps and the eave-rake corner, when to photograph, starter and overhang, and four worked examples.

You will be able to: Sequence eave metal, underlayment or ice barrier and rake metal on a gable roof, lap and nail it, and work out pieces, nails, rake length and face height with units and stated assumptions.

The sequence

Before any metal, read the adopted code edition, the shingle maker's instructions and any high-wind programme the job names.

Then: the ice-barrier decision; eave metal and underlayment or barrier, ordered per the method, eave laps and nails photographed before cover; rake metal; corner photos and checklist; starter course; shingles; overhang check.

The sequence at the eaves and rakes of a shingle roofEight numbered steps from top to bottom. 1 prepare. 2 is a question, ice barrier required here. 3 has two branches: no, eave metal on the deck with the underlayment over it; yes, the barrier and the eave metal in the order of the method used, the eave metal photographed before anything covers it. Both rejoin at 4, underlayment up the roof. 5 rake metal from the eave up. 6 photos and checklist before cover. 7 starter course. 8 shingles and overhang check.Prepare: code, maker, programmeIce barrier required here?Eave metal onthe deck, photos, underlaymentover itBarrier and metalin method's order;eave metal photosbefore coverUnderlayment up the roofRake metal from the eave upPhotos and checklistStarter courseShingles; overhang checknoyes12345678

A vertical flow of eight numbered steps with a decision at step 2. 1 prepare; 2 ice barrier required here? No leads to eave metal on the deck with the underlayment over it; yes leads to the barrier and eave metal in the order of the method used, the eave metal photographed before anything covers it; both rejoin at 4; 4 underlayment up the roof; 5 rake metal from the eave up; 6 photos and checklist before cover; 7 starter course; 8 shingles and overhang check.

1
Prepare: adopted code edition and amendments; shingle maker's instructions; any high-wind programme
2
Ice barrier required by the jurisdiction? Whether one is required is set locally (Table R301.2(1))
3
No: eave metal on the deck (laps 2 in or more, nails high in the flange, none in the face), photographed, then underlayment over it (2018 IRC). Yes: the code order (metal on the deck, barrier over it), or a documented published method agreed with the inspector: ARMA, a 12 in strip, the metal, then the barrier; NRCA, the sheet on the deck, the metal, then a strip-in; IKO, the membrane wrapped round the deck edge, then the metal
4
Underlayment up the roof
5
Rake metal over the underlayment, from the eave up, upper over lower, bottom piece past the eave metal
6
Photographs of each corner and the inspection checklist, before the starter course and shingles cover them
7
Starter course
8
Shingles; overhang checked against the window for the profile (ARMA; NRCA)
The ice-barrier question comes first, because it sets the eave order: the 2018 IRC order, or the ARMA, NRCA or IKO method agreed with the inspector. Eave laps and nails are photographed before anything covers them; step 6 comes before the starter course and shingles.

What this video shows: Per its step list: eave metal under the eave membrane and rake metal over the rake membrane, rake metal worked up from the bottom with upper pieces over lower, and the rake bottom past the eave flashing.

What this video shows: IKO, a shingle maker, on drip edge at eaves and rakes (from 0:29 by its chapters), its ice and water protector and underlayment, and both eave orders: the traditional one and IKO's metal-over-membrane method. IKO's products and method.

Glossary

Shingle fashion
Upper pieces lapped over lower ones, so water runs over each joint.
Strip-in
A strip of self-adhering membrane over a metal flange, sealing it to the sheet below.
Slope factor
Sloped length per unit of horizontal run: sqrt(12 x 12 + rise x rise) / 12 for a rise in 12.
Starter course
The first course at the eave that sets the shingle overhang.
