Substrates, blocking and attachment: materials, standards and design constraints

ED-1, ES-1 and FM 1-49 and what each covers; ED-1 nailer minimums and commentary; masonry anchorage; treated or untreated wood; fastener rules for treated wood; moisture and isolation; and the as-tested rule.

You will be able to: Identify which document governs the nailer, apply the ED-1 minimums and commentary layout, choose fasteners and isolation that suit treated wood, and explain why a tested edge must be fastened exactly as tested.

Which document says what

ED-1, SPRI's roof edge design standard, was first approved as an American National Standard in 2019; SPRI proposed a revision in October 2025.

ES-1 (2022) is the edge test standard.

FM Global revised Data Sheet 1-49, Perimeter Flashing, in October 2024; ED-1 lists FM 1-49 among its nailer design references.

ED-1 values here come from that proposal; the editions your project names may differ.

Glossary

ED-1
SPRI's design standard for roof edge systems used with low-slope roofing, including nailers; first approved as an American National Standard in 2019, with a revision proposed in October 2025.
ES-1
ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1, the test standard for roof edge systems used with low-slope roofing; the 2022 edition was approved November 21, 2022.
Commentary
In the October 2025 proposed ED-1 revision, the explanatory sections, written with 'should', beside the standard's own sections, which use 'shall'.
Preservative-treated wood
Wood treated against decay; NRCA notes that most current-generation treatments are more corrosive to metal than the older CCA treatment.
Hot-dip galvanized (ASTM A153)
Fasteners zinc-coated to the ASTM A153 standard, which NRCA names as generally acceptable in wood treated with copper-based preservatives.
Isolation membrane
A barrier between metal and treated wood; NRCA names a single-ply or self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen membrane as examples.
