CAD, CAM and shop data exchange · Lesson 3 of 4

CAD, CAM and shop data exchange: methods and worked application

An eight-step method from drawing to folder-ready data, worked through on the FlashDraft drip edge: format, units, legs, girth, limit check, signed bends and the feature list, plus how to send drawings that survive the exchange.

You will be able to: Take a drip edge from drawing to folder-ready data: confirm the format and units, letter the legs on the mold line, sum the girth, check the AFS limits, record the signed bends and write the feature list, stating every assumption.

The method

Eight steps, in order: identify the real format; confirm the units; isolate the flashing; letter the legs on the mold line; record the signed bends and name their convention; sum the girth and check the limits, bend rule included; write the feature list; verify before the folder.

Gates: an unreadable file is exported again; a blocked profile is changed. Shop review goes on for AFS to confirm.

From a drawing to folder-ready dataA flow of eight numbered steps: 1 identify the real format, then a decision, readable? If not, export the format the upload's message advises; 2 confirm the units; 3 isolate the flashing geometry; 4 letter the legs on the mold line; 5 record the signed bends and their convention; 6 sum the girth and check the limits, then a decision, the limit result: pass goes on; blocked means change the profile; shop review goes on for AFS to confirm; 7 write the feature list; 8 verify before the folder.1Identify the real format2Confirm the units3Isolate the flashing4Letter legs, mold line5Record signed bends6Sum girth, check limits7Write the feature list8Verify before the folderreadable?yesno: exportas advisedresult?passblocked:change itshop review:goes on, AFSconfirms

Eight numbered steps from identifying the format to verifying before the folder, with two decisions: an unreadable file is exported again in the format the upload message advises, and a profile blocked by the limits (including the bend rule for its material and thickness) is changed; a profile that passes goes on, and one marked for shop review also goes on for AFS to confirm.

1
Identify the real format from the file's contents
2
Confirm the units against a known dimension
3
Isolate the flashing geometry: its layer, model space
4
Letter the legs on the mold line
5
Record the signed bends and name their convention
6
Sum the girth and check the AFS limits, including the bend rule for the material and thickness
7
Write the feature list, straight first and last
8
Verify the bend directions and revision before the folder
The method of this lesson. The two decisions are gates: a file that cannot be read, or a profile the limits block, goes no further until it is fixed. Shop review is not a block: the profile goes on for AFS to confirm.

Glossary

Mold line
The sharp-corner line a flashing profile is measured on; AFS letters legs and sums girth on it.
Girth
The total flat width of a profile, the sum of its legs plus any hem allowance; AFS's maximum is 48 in.
End flange
A leg at either free end of a profile, beyond the outermost bend; AFS's minimum is 0.5 in.
Signed interior angle
How FlashDraft records a bend: the included angle between the two legs, with a sign for the direction of the fold.
