Production scheduling and traceability: methods and worked application

A job packet for one order, worked examples of the AFS queue order, Little's Law, the next business day on the shop's clock and pieces for a run, then the inspection points that keep a job traceable.

You will be able to: Build a job packet and apply the AFS queue, delivery-day and piece-count rules to a realistic job, recording assumptions, units and inspection points.

Slide 1 of 10

The job packet

One packet per job, filled from the records, never from memory:

  • Job name, PO and jobsite
  • Profile, with any "modified from" lineage
  • Material, gauge, colour, and any batch to match
  • Quantity, lengths and pieces per run
  • Due date, and rush with its source
  • Approval, machine profile number, finish time
  • Delivery day, window and signature

Sources

  • AFS shop queue: queue order, rush pinning and its two explicit sources, card states and the shop record of each job - Architectural Flashing Supply
  • AFS job records: modified profiles saved as new locked profiles, admin audit log, invoice copied from the approved quote, signed delivery receipt - Architectural Flashing Supply
  • AFS delivery scheduling: next business day after Mark finished, worked out on the shop's own clock, four delivery windows, one delivery per shop job - Architectural Flashing Supply
  • ECCA Technical Note: Colour Consistency and the Use of Prepainted Metal Panels on Buildings - European Coil Coating Association (ECCA)

Videos for this lesson

What this video shows: A university lecture on the relationship between inventory, throughput rate and flow time: Little's Law, as used in the worked example.

Video: Process Analysis Little's Law (Video 9) by Prof. Bussom - Widener University, on YouTube. AFS checked its description against this lesson.

Glossary

Job packet
The set of records for one job: identity, profile and its lineage, material, quantities, dates, approval, machine send, finish and delivery, filled from the records rather than memory.
Business day (AFS delivery)
A weekday, Monday to Friday. AFS books a finished job's delivery for the next one, worked out on the shop's own clock in Central time; holidays are rescheduled by hand.
Delivery window (AFS)
One of the AFS delivery time slots; an automatically booked delivery starts in the 8–10 AM window and can be changed.
Splice lap
The length by which one piece overlaps the next at a joint; every lap shortens the length each extra piece adds to the run.
