Production scheduling and traceability · Lesson 2 of 4

Production scheduling and traceability: materials, standards and design constraints

What a mill test report carries and how an owner checks it, the federal origin rules that reach from the melt to the coating, paint batches and direction on prepainted metal, storage time as a constraint, and the AFS limits that shape a run.

You will be able to: Identify the documents and rules that make traceability a contract requirement (mill test reports, origin rules, coating batches), and the storage and shop limits that constrain a schedule.

What a mill test report carries

Portland Bolt lists what its certified mill test reports always carry: heat number, grade, dimensions, mechanical properties, chemistry and any heat treatment.

On receiving Mill Test Certifications, the inspector checks the physical and chemical test results against the designated grade.

A signed supplier certificate showing actual test values may stand in (Iowa DOT).

Videos for this lesson

What this video shows: CRSI's short overview of the mill test report that normally accompanies a reinforcing steel (rebar) shipment: the same kind of document, for rebar rather than sheet metal.

Video: Mill Test Reports by Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), on YouTube. AFS checked its description against this lesson.

What this video shows: The continuous coil coating line, stage by stage: cleaning, pretreatment, coating, curing and quality control. It explains how a coated run is made; its description does not mention batch-to-batch colour.

Video: ✅ Coil Coating Process by National Coil Coating Association, on YouTube. AFS checked its description against this lesson.

Glossary

Certified cutting list
In Iowa DOT I.M. 565, the fabricator's cutting list certifying the heat number locations, that is, where each heat of steel ends up in the work; the inspector checks recorded heat numbers against it.
Iron or steel products (2 CFR 184)
Under the federal Buy America rule for infrastructure projects, articles, materials or supplies made wholly or predominantly of iron or steel, or both.
Production batch (coil coating)
In ECCA's guidance, prepainted material coated in one defined run with a specific paint batch under controlled process conditions.
Batch zoning
Using one paint batch on each visible facade plane and changing batch only at a corner, joint or shadow line, as ECCA advises for prepainted metal.
Directionality
A coil-applied paint's change in appearance with the direction it is viewed and lit, most noticeable in mica and metallic finishes (Arconic); installing pieces all one way keeps it even.
Wet storage stain
A bulky white or grey zinc corrosion deposit that forms on closely packed, newly galvanized material kept damp and poorly ventilated (AGA).
FIFO (first in, first out)
Stock control that uses the oldest material first; Falk lists it among the steps against storage stain on coils.
